The Repeating Fast Radio Burst FRB 121102 as Seen on Milliarcsecond Angular Scales

چکیده
The millisecond-duration radio flashes known as fast radio bursts (FRBs) represent an enigmatic astrophysical phenomenon. Recently, the sub-arcsecond localization (∼100 mas precision) of FRB121102 using the Very Large Array has led to its unambiguous association with persistent radio and optical counterparts, and to the identification of its host galaxy. However, an even more precise localization is needed in order to probe the direct physical relationship between the millisecond bursts themselves and the associated persistent emission. Here, we report very-long-baseline radio interferometric observations using the European VLBI Network and the 305 m Arecibo telescope, which simultaneously detect both the bursts and the persistent radio emission at milliarcsecond angular scales and show that they are co-located to within a projected linear separation of 40 pc (12 mas angular separation, at 95% confidence). We detect consistent angular broadening of the bursts and persistent radio source (∼2–4 mas at 1.7 GHz), which are both similar to the expected Milky Way scattering contribution. The persistent radio source has a projected size constrained to be 0.7 pc (0.2 mas angular extent at 5.0 GHz) and a lower limit for the brightness temperature of T 5 10 K b 7 ́ . Together, these observations provide strong evidence for a direct physical link between FRB121102 and the compact persistent radio source. We argue that a burst source associated with a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus or a young neutron star energizing a supernova remnant are the two scenarios for FRB121102 that best match the observed data.

A survey of FRB fields: limits on repeatability
Several theories exist to explain the source of the bright, millisecond duration pulses known as fast radio bursts (FRBs). If the progenitors of FRBs are non-cataclysmic, such as giant pulses from pulsars, pulsar–planet binaries, or magnetar flares, FRB emission may be seen to repeat. We have undertaken a survey of the fields of eight known FRBs from the High Time Resolution Universe survey to ...
متن کاملRadio-interferometric Monitoring of Frb 131104: a Coincident Agn Flare, but No Evidence for a Cosmic Fireball
The localization of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been hindered by the poor angular resolution of the detection observations and inconclusive identification of transient or variable counterparts. Recently a γ-ray pulse of 380 s duration has been associated with the fast radio burst FRB 131104. We report on radio-continuum imaging observations of the original localization region of the FRB, begin...
متن کاملOn Associating Fast Radio Bursts with Afterglows
A radio source that faded over 6 days, with a redshift z ≈ 0.5 host, has been identified by Keane et al. (2016) as the transient afterglow to a Fast Radio Burst (FRB 150418). We report followup radio and optical observations of the afterglow candidate, and find a source that is consistent with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If the afterglow-candidate is nonetheless a prototypical FRB aftergl...

Abstract. We present new milliarcsecond resolution observations of the H absorption against the kiloparsec scale inner jet of the radio galaxy 3C 293. Using a combination of observations obtained with global VLBI, MERLIN and the VLA we have imaged the strong and extensive neutral hydrogen absorption against the radio core and jet of this source across a wide range of angular scales. In this pr...
متن کاملTesting Einstein's Equivalence Principle With Fast Radio Bursts.
The accuracy of Einstein's equivalence principle (EEP) can be tested with the observed time delays between correlated particles or photons that are emitted from astronomical sources. Assuming as a lower limit that the time delays are caused mainly by the gravitational potential of the Milky Way, we prove that fast radio bursts (FRBs) of cosmological origin can be used to constrain the EEP with ...
